Brief Introduction to Lean Construction:

Creating a new common sense

Presenter:                                Greg Howell, Lean Construction Institute

Lean Construction creates three opportunities for improving project delivery - “Impeccable Coordination," "Project as Production System," and "Project as Collective Enterprise.” The seminar will introduce key concepts, principles and techniques to make sharp the difference between Lean Construction and current project delivery practices. The agenda, what happens when, is built around the Three Opportunities in a way to surprise and provoke participants, to shift common sense. On completion, participants will understand the essential actions necessary to take advantage of each opportunity and will be able to design their own plan for moving forward. Expect a full day starting at 8AM and closing at 5PM. Participants should be fully available for the day. We will start and end on time.

Lean Construction Institute LCI/The Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL)

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Project Production Systems Laboratory  (P2SL), University of California, Berkeley is dedicated to developing and deploying knowledge and tools for the management ofproject production systems and the management of organizations that produce and deliver goods and services through such systems.  Project production systems include construction, product development, software engineering, air, and sea ship building, work order systems, job shops, performing arts productions, oil field development, and health care delivery.
